POINT MADE
Time doesn't help anti-Chavism
The victory of the Venezuelan opposition, who have got over the first legal hurdle to move forward with the referendum to oust Maduro, must be placed in the context of a race against the clock in which time is against them. The thongs of power are willing to put any number of obstacles in the way so the referundum does not happen. Or if it must happen, they may allow it to happen next year, when it would not force the resignation of the president but rather a simple government reshuffle. With the increase of authoritarianism, continuous power cuts, public workers forced to work less and thousands crossing the border to Colombia to eat, Chavism is wobbling but has no intention of throwing in the towel.
